There's nothing to get right

A lot of us are used to making things for a reason. To be good at them. To make something useful. To have something impressive at the end.

This session is a chance to put that aside for a little while.

You can choose a colour simply because you want to use it. Change your mind halfway through. Paint over something you just made. Follow something because you're curious about it, without having to explain why.

Your painting doesn't need to look a certain way. It just needs to be yours.

A man in a green polo shirt and jeans holds up a colorful painted canvas showing a blue sky and green landscape in a warm, creative studio environment with another person visible in the background.
A smiling man wearing a red t-shirt and a beige cap sits behind a wooden easel in an art studio, holding up a colorful painting of a meditating figure. The workspace is cluttered with art supplies, including another easel, a glass of red wine, paint tubes, brushes, and paint palettes.
A woman with glasses and long dark hair holds up a colorful painting featuring white birds on a green and blue background. She is standing in an art studio with multiple wooden easels, paintbrushes, and paint tubes on a table in front of her.

How the session works

I'll guide you through the beginning with prompts around colour, movement and mark-making.

From there, everyone's painting starts to go in a different direction.

I'm there throughout the session if you get stuck, but I'm not going to tell you what your painting should look like or what the 'right' next step is.

A big part of the process is noticing your own choices before immediately judging them.

Sometimes that means following an instinct. Sometimes it means doing the opposite of what you normally would. Sometimes it just means putting some paint down and seeing what happens.

Why I host these sessions

This way of working grew out of my own painting practice.

The more I painted, the more I noticed how quickly expectation could get in the way, especially when I already had an idea of what I wanted a painting to become.

Leaving some things undecided gave me more room to respond, change direction and actually enjoy making again.

That’s what I wanted to share through these sessions.

Not a way to paint “properly”, but a few hours where you can make something simply because you enjoy making it. Without needing it to be useful, impressive or even what you expected.
